The autosampler is particularly useful for customers who often have a series of samples to run on their benchtop nmr and want to save the hassle of having to keep coming back to exchange samples. Using an hplc syringe, the system mimics manual injections and eliminates the need for transfer lines — reducing the risk of sample carry-over.

For gas sample, autosamplers are connected with pumps which continuously deliver any gas mixture or air inside the device for analysis. Using scripts, it is possible to couple any autosampler with any analytical instrument, as long as both have a graphical user interface (gui). For solids, autosamplers are used in combination with elemental analyzers. In theory, the same principle automatic sample changer  apply to autosamplers, but the precision of the sample introduction system in autosamplers is such that partial- and filled-loop injection give similar precision.

If the needle becomes blocked or otherwise damaged, the entire needle-loop piece must be replaced, so maintenance costs can be higher with the needle-in-loop autosampler. A simple setup window allows you to tell autosampler which midi port it should be sending data to and on what channel, and also on what audio input to expect the signal, so you don't even have to repatch your audio interface to make it work.

The needle-in-loop autosampler is especially useful for very small sample injections and when the amount of sample available is limited. The sampling takes place manually by the operator, the injection is carried out automatically, controlled by the device's multiwin software. Another common design for autosamplers for liquids is of a sampling apparatus that moves freely in the 3d space, similarly to cnc routers and 3d printers , for instance.
